Vacation

Ask A Copywriter will return after Labor Day.
Cheers.

Do you need to relax?

I’m setting sail today on a Caribbean cruise, so here are a few Corona ads I haven’t posted yet to put you in the same mood I’m enjoying.

Summerbration.com gives you a different reason to celebrate every day of the summer (and of course recommendations for bars serving Corona specials.)

Do you still love Whitney?

A lot of lyric references to remind you why you should be excited about her new album and free concert in Central Park for Good Morning America.

Should you think of advertising as preventive medicine?

Duane Reade is so ubiquitous in NYC that it'd be easy to think that they don’t need to run ads. But we’re coming out of a recession and CVS and Walgreens are slowing making inroads on their turf.

Do you want to be famous?

You can argue that social media makes it easy for anyone to become famous today. But I think meaningful and lasting attention requires real talent and hard work.

Debbie Allen said it best, "You want fame? ... Well, fame costs. And right here is where you start paying. With sweat."
It's true whether you perform on a stage or in an ad agency.

But I'm still going to pretend that my wife is making me go see this.

You can learn everything about the movie and add your photo to the "Wall of Fame" at GenerationFame.com.
They’re also doing a talent search at Six Flags theme parks, which I’m amazed they’re not turning into a reality TV show.

Has the future arrived?

Well, almost. The site is full of future qualifiers but I like that they’re taking a stand and announcing a truly bold goal.

Which do you respect more? Women or the law?

These headlines aren’t respectful, but they are funny.

Then there’s this gem on TLC’s site:
“Some moms pack lunches. These moms pack heat.”

Will we ever stop making up words?

Nike and Footlocker add “hyperize” to the ad lexicon.

More executions on The Denver Egotist. Official site here.

Is it ok to use sex to sell an unsexy product?

I don't mean bikini-clad models holding power tools. But a little sexual innuendo actually makes sense if you're a mattress store.

Sleepy's On Fifth has these t-shirts on display in their store window.

Will the movie live up to it’s marketing?

Police tape style warning contains a QR code that pulls up this link HTTP://R.BEETAGG.COM/?41V0T1 to a cool documentary style video.

Is it really OK to exaggerate to make a point?

I love the message of this Pepsi and Coca-cola logo comparison that made the rounds a few weeks ago. But I was bugged by that fact that it really wasn’t accurate.
So thanks to Brand New for putting this revision together.

Hat tip to Murketing for linking to this Thinking Aloud post which makes a few nice points.

Is this the end of teaser campaigns?

Not by a long shot. When they work, you get a lot of buzz.

This one drives to a site with a bunch of videos featuring a whacked out Woody Harrelson.

Do you prefer boring or normal?

Toshiba just launched a quirky campaign pitting two average small towns against one another. As they describe it on their site, you can “see how people in Boring, OR and Normal, IL use our laptops to bring excitement to their everyday lives.”
I discovered it when this tiny strip of a banner ad at the bottom of my browser caught my eye.

Rolling my mouse over it opened this window:

It took a bit to load, but then this oddly amusing video played:

Are you afraid of getting old and ill?

On my commute this morning, I saw several of these posters of the caduceus symbol with the herald's staff replaced with a cane.
Cool image. It is a commentary on health care reform? A teaser ad? Street art?

UPDATE: Turns out I'm still a sucker for teaser campaigns. Stefan left this link in the comments: snakesonacane.com. Another mysterious site with a countdown clock.

UPDATE 2: Thanks to @TannerBoyd for figuring out that it's a countdown to the season premiere of House.

Do sub-brands always get sub-par treatment?

I’m glad Heineken is continuing their Give yourself a good name campaign.

But the new Heineken Light work just isn’t as smart.

Where will advertising sprout up next?

Ads keep popping up in new (and most often unwanted) places.
But these are cute and deliver free wi-fi.

Toyota planted these giant flower shaped wi-fi antennas in front of the Flat Iron building to promote the new Prius.
